Ljósanótt 2026 in Keflavík: 3–6 September, Saturday Fireworks, Leave the Car

Ljósanótt — Night of Lights — is Thursday 3 to Sunday 6 September 2026 in Reykjanesbær (Keflavík, Njarðvík, Ásbrú). It is the peninsula’s culture-and-family weekend, named for the lighting of the seaside cliffs Bergið. The peak is Saturday 5 September: outdoor concert at Ægisgata from 19:30, fireworks at 22:00, then the Bergið cliffs light up. Most of it is free. It is not Reykjavík Culture Night — that one is 22 August in 101. This one is two weeks later, next to Keflavík Airport.

This is the visitor logistics page: should you stay on the peninsula, how to get in from KEF or Reykjavík, why you should not collect a hire car and drive into downtown Keflavík on Saturday night, and what to book around it. It is not a programme listing. Dates and the Saturday-night peak are from the official Ljósanótt site. Concert and fireworks times are from the official Saturday stage and fireworks pages — they still say *með fyrirvara*. Street-by-street closures are not listed yet.

Should you stay in Keflavík that weekend?

Yes, if you land at KEF around the first weekend of September and you want a free local festival instead of rushing into Reykjavík. The town is a music town; the weekend is concerts, open venues, kids’ programme and a Saturday-night crowd on the harbour side. You do not need a festival ticket. You do need a bed you can walk back to after the fireworks, or a plan for the 55 back to Reykjavík once the show is over.

• Stay in Keflavík or Njarðvík if you can. Saturday night is the point. A room you can walk to beats a cheaper one you then have to taxi out of a packed harbour.
• Do not treat Saturday as a Golden Circle day. Pickups from Reykjavík still work, but you will miss the only night that matters here. Put the day trip on Sunday, or skip it.
• Skólamatur is already advertising kjötsúpa on the 2026 site — a free-bowl habit from earlier years. Thursday–Friday are the quieter build-up; Sunday is the wind-down. Saturday night is the one that fills the harbour.
• Worth it if you like a small-town festival next to the airport. Not worth it if you wanted a quiet last night before a dawn flight — the Saturday outdoor show runs late.

Treat Saturday 5 September as a no-car night in Keflavík. Walk Ljósanótt. Collect the hire car on Sunday, or after the fireworks if you are leaving the peninsula.

Do not drive downtown on Saturday night

The official site is blunt: leave the car at home and use the free Ljósanæturstrætó. Traffic is limited around the festival area from Friday morning through Sunday. They have not published a street-by-street 2026 map, so do not invent one. Official parking pointers are Ægisgata and Tjarnargata 12. Saturday night at the harbour is a concert crowd, not a place to hunt for a space with a hire car you just picked up at KEF.

• Ljósanæturstrætó is the 2026 festival bus, free, inside Reykjanesbær — R1 Keflavík, R2 Njarðvík, R3 Ásbrú, plus on-demand R4 Hafnir. It does not stop at the KEF terminal. Hours on the official 2026 bus page: Saturday 10:00–01:00, Sunday 10:00–17:00, Friday from 16:00 (the Friday last trip is printed two ways on that page, so do not treat 22:50 vs 23:50 as settled). Hourly from Myllubakkaskóli via Krossmói.
• Regional Strætó is not free. The long-distance 55 (Reykjavík–Keflavík / airport) keeps the normal fare and the normal stop at Miðstöð. Do not mix it up with the free town festival bus.
• If you already have a car, park it outside the harbour / stage area and walk or take the festival bus. Do not leave it on Hafnargata and hope.
• Taxis exist, and KEF is minutes away. They will still crawl through a Saturday-night crowd. Walk if you are staying in town.

Getting there from KEF — and from Reykjavík

Keflavík Airport is not in Reykjavík, but it is in this town. Downtown Keflavík is a short taxi or local-bus hop from the terminal, not a 45-minute coach ride. If you land Friday or Saturday, go to your room and walk the festival. Do not collect a hire car “just in case” and then try to park it by the stage. • Landing at KEF: taxi or the local bus into Keflavík / Njarðvík. Bags and a festival night do not mix with a Saturday car pickup. Compare a Sunday airport desk instead — [Keflavík airport car rental](/blog/keflavik-airport-car-rental).
• Coming from Reykjavík: Strætó 55 is the regional bus to Keflavík and the airport. Pay the normal fare. Check straeto.is for the last useful Saturday return — do not assume a night bus after the fireworks.
• Staying in 101 and day-tripping it: possible on Friday or Sunday. Saturday night is the one that fills the harbour. If you only have Saturday, stay on the peninsula.
• Flying out Sunday morning: fine if you skip Saturday night or take an early night. The outdoor show is the late one.

Saturday night, then the Sunday car

The festival is named for Bergið — the sea cliffs by the harbour. Official Saturday: main stage at Ægisgata 19:30–22:30, fireworks 22:00–22:05 on Hafnargata, then the Bergið lights come on. Music keeps going after the display. Stand where you can see the cliffs; then walk home or get on the festival bus. Do not plan to retrieve a car from a downtown space at 22:00.

Sunday is when a car makes sense. Early September is also when the 2026–2027 Northern Lights season actually starts — short dark windows, first hunts running from Reykjavík. Do not skip Saturday fireworks for an aurora coach; treat that as a different night.
