Keflavík Airport Car Rental: Pickup at KEF, Skip Town 3–6 Sep (2026)

Most Iceland self-drives start at Keflavík (KEF). This page is the airport hour — shuttle versus a desk in the terminal, documents, late-night arrivals, the return, and what car class is enough for a first trip. It is not a sightseeing loop. Landing 3–6 September 2026? The town next to the airport is running [Ljósanótt (Night of Lights)](/blog/ljosanott-keflavik-night-of-lights-2026) — fireworks Saturday 5 September at 22:00. Collect the car if you need it for the rest of the trip. Do not drive into Keflavík that night. Blue Lagoon on Friday or Sunday instead.

Shuttle versus a desk in the terminal

Some brands have a desk in the arrivals area. Many run a short shuttle to a lot a few minutes away. Your confirmation email says which. Do not assume you walk out of baggage claim into a row of cars.

• Build 30–60 minutes after landing before you are on Route 41. Longer if several flights land together, or if you land in a winter bank.
• Follow the signs for rental cars / car hire. Shuttle stops are signed; the bus is usually free and frequent.
• Have the booking reference on your phone before you lose airport wifi.
• Photograph the car before you leave the lot — every rim, windscreen corner and door edge. Do this in the lot, not at the first waterfall.

The airport is not the hard part. The hard part is being tired, in the wind, with a queue, and deciding you will “just drive to the city.”

What to book before you land

• A full driving licence held for the period the supplier requires. An International Driving Permit only if your licence needs one for Iceland — many EU/EEA/US licences are accepted; confirm for your country.
• A credit card in the lead driver’s name for the deposit hold. Debit cards and a partner’s card are a common reason the desk says no.
• Age rules. Under-25 (sometimes under-23) surcharges and licence-held-for-X-years rules are common. Check before you book, not at 23:40 in the lot.
• A second driver if you will share a week of south-west or Ring Road days. Adding them at the desk is usually more expensive.
• Child seats if you need them — airport inventory is not a midnight guarantee.

What car class for a first trip

The KEF lot is where people upgrade because a laminated card said “4x4”. For a first Iceland trip that stays on paved south-west roads — Route 41, the Golden Circle, the South Coast, a daylight Reykjanes loop — a compact or small SUV (2WD) is enough. You do not need a highland 4x4 to leave the airport.

• Two people, a week in the south-west. A compact is fine if you pack light. A small SUV is calmer in Route 41 wind and nicer with luggage.
• Three or four adults. Book the small SUV (or a larger automatic) before you fly. The desk will not magically have a bigger class at 23:40.

Late-night arrivals

A lot of transatlantic and European flights land after 22:00. Desks usually still operate for booked customers, but the shuttle, the inspection and the first 45 minutes on Route 41 happen in the dark, often in wind. That is a worse first hour than people picture when they book “airport pickup” in July daylight.

• If you do collect, do not add a Reykjanes loop or a Blue Lagoon slot on the same clock. Sleep, then drive.

KEF vs Reykjavík city pickup

Airport pickup is the default because you land there. It is not always the cheapest or calmest plan.

• Pick up at KEF if you leave the south-west immediately, want the car for the whole trip, or land in daylight and are happy to drive Route 41.
• Pick up in Reykjavík (downtown or city-edge) if your first two or three nights are tour-based — a Golden Circle coach, a Blue Lagoon transfer, a city weekend. You save airport-surcharge days and the night-one drive.
• One-way KEF → Reykjavík (or the reverse) is common and usually cheap compared with a true cross-country one-way. East Fjords drop-offs are the expensive ones.

Returning the car

• Full-to-full is the cleanest fuel policy. Fill in Reykjanesbær (Keflavík / Njarðvík) on the way in — do not hunt for a pump at the terminal.
• Keep 30–45 minutes for the return inspection and the shuttle back to the terminal, more in a departure bank. Same-terminal returns are faster; shuttle brands need the extra hop.
• Photograph the car again. Keep the return receipt until the deposit clears.
• Do not plan a tight connection after a 06:00 drop-off you have never timed.

First day after the keys

Once you have the car, the honest forks are short.
