Pickup and insurance checklist

  • Terminal desk or shuttle lot

    Some brands sit in arrivals. Many run a short shuttle to a nearby lot. Your confirmation email says which — do not assume you walk out of baggage claim into a row of cars. Build 30–60 minutes after landing before you are on Route 41.

  • Documents and the deposit hold

    Bring a full licence (and an International Driving Permit only if your licence needs one for Iceland) plus a credit card in the lead driver’s name. Suppliers place a deposit hold; the amount and card rules vary by offer. Read the booking, not a blog guess.

  • Insurance exclusions before you pay

    Third-party is typically included. The decisions are collision excess, gravel (chips on Route 1 shoulders), and sand-and-ash where it is sold separately. A cheap daily rate with a large excess is not cheap. Credit-card cover often excludes Iceland gravel and ash — confirm with the issuer in writing.

  • Photograph the car in the lot

    Every rim, windscreen corner and door edge, before you leave. Do this in the lot, not at the first waterfall. Keep the return receipt until the hold clears.

Match the car to the route

Paved Ring Road, Golden Circle, South Coast (summer)

A compact or small SUV (2WD) is the usual first-trip answer on Route 1 and the south-west loops. You do not need a highland 4x4 to leave Keflavík, drive to Reykjavík, or run the classic paved days.

When a 4×4 actually matters

Take a 4x4 if you have a real highland / F-road day in summer and the contract explicitly allows F-roads — many “SUV” deals still forbid them. Extra clearance also helps in winter wind and snow, but winter tyres (confirm in writing) matter more than the badge.

F-roads are not the Ring Road

Highland F-roads open in summer, close most of the year, and are forbidden to 2WD. Driving one in a car that is not contracted for it can void cover. River fords are a separate risk even in a capable 4x4. When in doubt, book a guided highland day instead of upgrading the whole week at the KEF desk.

Frequently asked questions

Terminal or shuttle pickup?

Both exist at Keflavík (KEF). In-terminal desks are faster once you clear baggage. Shuttle brands add a short bus hop to an off-site lot — usually free and frequent, just not “walk out and go.” Your confirmation names the meeting point. Plan 30–60 minutes after landing; longer if several flights land together or you arrive in a winter bank.

Do I need a 4×4?

Not for a classic summer itinerary on paved roads — Golden Circle, South Coast, Reykjanes, and a fair-weather Ring Road on Route 1. Yes if you plan F-roads (and the contract allows them), or if you are travelling in winter and want extra clearance. Do not take a 2WD onto a highland track.

What deposits/insurance exclusions to check?

Read the excess, gravel protection, sand-and-ash, and the deposit hold on the offer you pick — amounts vary by supplier and card, so this page does not invent a figure. Photograph the car at pickup. If you rely on credit-card cover, confirm Iceland exclusions with the issuer before you fly; many cards skip gravel and ash.

Rather not drive?
