7-Day Iceland Ring Road Itinerary

The Ring Road (Route 1) circles the entire island in roughly 1,300 km, and a week is the classic amount of time to drive the whole thing without rushing. Here’s a realistic route that spreads the driving out evenly and hits the major regions in order.

Days 1–2: South Coast to the glacier lagoon

Head east from Reykjavík along the [South Coast](/tours/category/south-coast): Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara’s black sand, and on to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where icebergs drift out to the ocean. This stretch has the highest concentration of famous stops on the whole route, so give it two days rather than rushing through in one.

Days 3–4: East fjords to the north

The east fjords are quieter and more dramatic than most visitors expect — winding coastal roads between small fishing villages. Push on toward Lake Mývatn in the north, an otherworldly area of craters, lava fields and geothermal vents that feels completely different from the south.

Day 5: Akureyri and the north

Akureyri, Iceland’s second city, makes a comfortable base for a day of easier driving — whale watching from the fjord, waterfalls at Goðafoss, and a slower pace after several long driving days.

Days 6–7: West and back to Reykjavík

The final stretch runs back through the west, with the option to detour onto the Snæfellsnes peninsula — often called "Iceland in miniature" for packing glaciers, lava fields and coastline into one small area — before closing the loop into Reykjavík.

Budget more driving-hours than the map suggests. Icelandic roads reward slow, frequent stops, not point-to-point speed.
